After 40 years serving the students and organizations of Rutland County, Vermont, The Hayes Foundation closed its doors at the end of 2023. Our final round of grant-making took place in the spring of 2023. As part of its closing, the foundation made major gifts to two Rutland-County organizations, Rutland Area Robotics (Rutland) and Theater in the Woods (Middletown Springs), which offer high-level arts and STEM programming for county youth.
In 1982, The Walter Hayes, Sr., Beulah Buffum Hayes & Walter H. Hayes, Jr. Foundation (referred to simply as "The Hayes Foundation") was organized to provide educational and financial support for bright and motivated children living in Rutland County, Vermont. Walter H. Hayes, Beulah Buffum Hayes, and their son Walter Hayes Jr. were residents of the Rutland area for many years. Mrs. Hayes taught children in several communities and Walter Jr. attended public schools through his graduation from Rutland High School in 1940.
The Hayes Foundation, a private, 501(c)3 nonprofit foundation, was originally created for the purpose of carrying out the intentions expressed in the will of Walter Hayes Jr., specifically, to assist in the education of the youth of Rutland County, Vermont, with a special emphasis on assistance to intellectually gifted children. Over the years, the foundation collaborated with or ran summer programs for gifted children, including Relics and Ruins and Summerweek. The last Summerweek camp took place in 2010. The foundation made its final round of student grants in the spring of 2023.
Although the Foundation is no longer operating, our list of links for academic and arts enrichment in addition to general gifted resources for parents and educators will remain available for the foreseeable future. We hope you will find it helpful. Please note that we are no longer updating the links page; if you encounter a broken link we recommend looking up the name of the organization/program of interest on a search engine.
